The City of South Beloit will begin environmental cleanup this fall on 11 acres of land along Shirland Avenue across from ABC Supply Stadium that the city has owned since 2006.

In 2023, the city learned it had been awarded $311,400 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to clean up the site, which had been the site of several manufacturing operations over the years, including for steel fabrication, refrigeration manufacturing, and even for the making of shoes.

The city bought the land in 2006 for $475,000 and tore down the former Freeman Shoe building in 2008 at a cost of about $125,000.
