For many years, Wisconsin has been a leader in collecting and supplying approximately 200,000 pairs of recycled glasses for global missions. However, since COVID, many collection sites in other states have closed. As a result, the Wisconsin Lions are now receiving more than 1,000,000 pairs of glasses annually—FAR beyond what the Lions processing center can manage. The bottleneck is in reading the prescriptions, and inventory has dropped significantly because the volume coming in exceeds our capacity to process it.

To ensure the Wisconsin Lions can continue accepting donations and remain a key national resource, we are opening the first satellite center in the state here in Beloit at Beloit Family Eye Care. The new autolensometer will allow very lightly trained volunteers to read the prescriptions in the donated glasses. This step is essential to prevent our system from becoming overwhelmed and to ensure the increased demand can continue to be met. If the main center is forced to slow or stop intake, national groups will turn elsewhere—and we risk losing Wisconsin’s long-standing leadership role.
